VJ Ken spends second night in police custody

Renowned videographer and social media influencer VJ Ken has spent a second night in police custody following his arrest for alleged child abduction and defilement.

VJ Ken, real name Kenneth Makina, yesterday appeared before the Blantyre Central Magistrate’s Court where he pleaded not guilty on both charges. He was arrested on Tuesday by Ndirande Police officers for allegedly detaining a 15-year-old girl at his house.

The accused asked for bail, but the court denied citing possible interference and security of the witnesses as he stays in the same locality with them.

VJ Ken’s lawyers asked the State to consider giving bail to the suspect to enable him to continue supporting his family.

They argued that VJ Ken is a known member of the Ndirande Township community. He has never committed any crime before and he is devoted to commit to all bail conditions.

In her determination, senior resident magistrate Mercy Bonongwe said giving bail was not absolute and that the case was serious.

She said: “The suspect knows the witnesses and they live in the same area. They are children and can easily be interfered with. The bail should be made once the two witnesses appear before the court.”

Bonongwe has since adjourned to tomorrow for hearing. VJ Ken is being accused of child abduction under section 264 and having a relationship with a minor under section 138 of the Penal Code.

VJ Ken’s arrest followed a complaint to the police by the girls’ parents. They said she went missing from home since November 15.
